Leptospira

Let's take a look at some bacteria in this image. This is a scanning electron micrograph image of a member of the Leptospira genus. These organisms are long, thin motile spirochetes that can be found free or attached to hosts. You will find them in muddy and freshwater areas in the tropics and at least 17 species of this genus that cause diseases in humans. Leptospirosis infections can cause many symptoms, and infected individuals may not even show symptoms. They may have fevers, headaches, muscle aches, and vomiting. More extreme symptoms of infection include jaundice, red eyes, diarrhea, and abdominal pains.
