Curvularia geniculata

Here's a little fungus named Curvularia geniculata. This is a scanning electron micrograph image of a colony of these dematiaceous filamentous fungi. You are able to see both the hyphae in the background and the conidia that hold fungal spores. Under normal circumstances, C. geniculata is found in the soil. If this fungus comes into contact with open wounds, it can start a fungal infection that will spread throughout your body.

Be sure to always wash your hands with soap after you work in the dirt. Remember that you don't always need to use anti-bacterial soap. Anti-bacterial soap is no stronger at killing fungus than normal soap. Just make sure you stay clean.
