Wasp Eye
Since we were trying for a wide sample of microscopic imagery, we wanted to put a few larger animals into the mix. Large is relative. Compared to a bacteria, this wasp is huge. But compared to you or an elephant... Not so big. This electron micrograph shows a close look of a wasp's head and eye. It is magnified about 35x normal size for this image. Wasp's have a compound eye that is made up of hundreds of receptors. The receptors are called ommatidia and have their own lens and specialized cells. You can also see the base of antennae in this image. Image Credit: CDC/Janice Carr Download Wallpaper: 800 x 600 | 1024 x 768 Related galleries: Plants | Animals | Microscopic
