Red Blood Cells

We've taken a quick look at bacteria, protists, and fungi. This image gives you a close look at a human red blood cell. Red blood cells, also called erythrocytes, move through your circulatory system and carry oxygen to the cells of your body. This scanning electron micrograph shows a few cells that have been magnified a little over 11,000 times.

The red objects are the blood cells are the clumpy material is called fibrin. Fibrin helps in the clotting process. Notice how the RBCs are biconcave in shape. It is actually more efficient to be indented than a perfect sphere. These indentations allow RBCs to have a greater surface area and carry more oxygen through your body.
