Vibrio vulnificus Bacteria
Let's take a look at a grouping of Vibrio vulnificus bacteria. This scanning electron micrograph shows these bacteria at about 13,000 times their actual size. These bacteria are in the same family with others that cause a disease called cholera. This species is a little different because these can be found in salt water. They are defined as halophilic vibrios (salt loving). Even though they don't cause cholera, these bacteria can cause disease when found in contaminated seafood. Symptoms include vomiting and diarrhea. More extreme cases of infection can cause liver damage, septic shock, or skin lesions. It's a nasty bacterium that can kill up to 50% of people who become infected.
