Staphylococcus aureus

We now introduce you to the one species of the famous Staphylococcus genus. This scanning electron micrograph of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria shows them at about 9,500 times their normal size. These are a bit special and known by scientists as methicillin-resistant (antibiotic resistant). When infection occurs, skin infections usually occur. But don't worry. If you are healthy, your body easily fights off these wee beasties.

If your immune system is weak because you have had surgery or a major illness, Staph infections can cause problems. This image displays a weaker species of the bacteria. Sometimes the strains found in hospitals are resistant to many drugs and cause serious problems, even death. Staphylococcus species can make it inside of your body during surgery and spread and infection internally.
