Cells
Which of these terms does NOT belong with the others?
There are many types of cells. While you may think of large groupings of animal and plant cells, there are many different types of cells in those descriptions. Tree bark cells are different from flower cells. Neurons in your brain are much different from cells in your skeleton.
According to Cell Theory, the cell is the basic unit of structure in living things. Plant cells have cell walls made of cellulose. Some bacteria have a different type of cell wall. Cells can only come from other cells. There are many cells that no not have a nucleus (prokaryotes).
Viruses do not have basic cell structures or organelles. Some biologists do not even consider viruses to be living organisms. They can only reproduce with the help of living cells and complex cell machinery.
Mitochondria have small amounts of DNA. You will also find DNA in the cell's nucleus and the chloroplasts of plant cells.
Albert Einstein did not study cells. He was a physicist. Anton von Leeuwenhoek developed the microscope. Robert Hooke was the first scientist to refer to “cells” in cork tissues. Robert Brown is credited with discovering the cell nucleus.
You will need a microscope if you want to look at cells and the smaller cell organelles. There are many types of microscopes with different levels of magnification. You will probably use compound microscopes in your classes.
A pair of centrioles is only found in animal cells. Plant cells can have cell walls, chloroplasts, and vacuoles.
All cells have one type of membrane or another. While the membranes have the same basic structure, the membrane proteins are unique to different types of cells. Plants and some protist cells can have chloroplasts. Prokaryotes do not have a cell nucleus.
All of these molecules are found in cells. Proteins can be found in the cytoskeleton and the membrane. Lipids are found in the cell membranes. Sugars can be found in the mitochondria or chloroplasts.
Poison is the term that does not belong with the others. The terms cells, tissues, and organs are all related to the complexity of cellular systems. Here is the full list:
